On Thursday, April 11, during the first-ever Boomerang conference organized by Infopresse, I gave a presentation on a subject that’s very important to me: the challenges that web strategists are currently confronting on a professional level.
It occurred to me that in the last two years, my work methods have greatly changed. Why? Because the world in which we live is increasingly more complex and fast-paced. As Joi Ito, Director of MIT Media Lab, so eloquently puts it, “In the world of complexity, strategy is your enemy and agility is your strength.”
The presentation below touches on the following:
- Why does the Internet world move so quickly? And why is it so complex?
- What is the difference between the role of the strategist and the role of the traditional web strategist?
- Why can’t strategy, in its current state, help us solve complex problems?
- What support is there to enable good decision-making in a fast-moving and complex world?

The answer may already be clear to you: in order to find solutions to complex problems, strategies must be developed by multidisciplinary teams. The role of the strategist in this team is to support the emergence of new practices and encourage a sustained level of ingenuity throughout the process.
This presentation was designed to spark discussion about the role of the strategist in agile and complex environments. Strategists are already dealing with scale issues in their efforts to maintain coherence at both the executive and operational level; a task that becomes even more complicated in a fast-paced and complex environment.
